Legal Services Corporation “LSC” is the largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans in the nation. Established in 1974, LSC operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. LSC grantees handle the basic civil legal needs of the poor, addressing matters involving safety, subsistence, and family stability. Most legal aid practices are focused on family law, including domestic violence and child support and custody, and on housing matters, including evictions and foreclosures.
The LSC board meets quarterly. They attempt to hold their meetings in a different state each time. This tradition means it could be more than ten years before they meet in Florida again. Prior to the meeting, LSC reaches out to legal aid service groups in the state to collect nominations for individuals and groups making a significant impact in their communities. Ausley McMullen was nominated by Leslie Powell-Boudreaux and her colleagues with Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) citing more than a decade of support for LSNF and the Legal Aid Foundation. “In addition to taking an extraordinary number (100+) of pro bono cases in bankruptcy, landlord-tenant and consumer law matters”, they said in their nomination, “Ausley McMullen attorneys have mentored LSNF staff and other volunteers, led expungement workshops, and staffed regular probate clinics.”
Ausley McMullen is honored to have received LSNF’s nomination and humbled to have been chosen by LSC as the Florida law firm to receive the Pro Bono Service Award. Others in Florida receiving awards from LSC were U.S. Senator Ashley Moody and Florida Supreme Court Justice John D. Couriel (Champions of Justice Award Recipients). Howard Rosenblatt, Mark Wolfson, Carl Domino, Paul Regensdorf, Elena Otero (Pro Bono Service Award – Individual Attorneys) and Lake County Bar Association (Pro Bono Service Award).
